Driving distractions that are not your phone

Everyone wants to be a safe driver. Getting into an accident is expensive and can leave you with significant injuries.

Often, accidents are caused by drivers who are not focused on the road ahead. While phones often get the blame for distracted drivers, there are many things both in and out of your car that can distract you from safe driving.

Here are a few things (other than your phone) that could pull your focus off of the road.

Passengers

One of the most challenging distractions in your vehicle is the people you take with you. Often, conversations with passengers can lead to you taking your eyes off the road while increasing your reaction time in an emergency.

While adult passengers can be distracting, their younger counterparts can cause even more distractions. You may not be able to avoid driving with your children, but you should keep in mind that they can be a distraction whether they need attention or want to chat.

Eating

Driving can seem like such a simple task that it can make sense to combine other simple tasks while you get from here to there. When you have a busy day, it can be convenient to grab fast food and eat on your way to your destination.

Under ideal circumstances, you can likely eat your food without incident. However, when your meal spills on your lap or your cup leaks, it can shift your focus off the road.

Although anything can cause a distraction, you can prevent accidents by avoiding as many of them as possible.
